WHAT IS HIS NAME?

Does he have a name?

In Exodus 3:13-15, the Creator revealed to Moshe that His eternal Name is represented by the Hebrew letters "yud-hey-vuv-hey", often shown in English as "YHVH or YHWH." Since He "spoke" the name, Moses knew the pronunciation of it. The Bible says that the very Name itself is to be used, propagated and spoken:

Moses said to Elohim "Look, when I appear before the people of Israel and say to them, 'The Elohim of your ancestors has sent me to you'; and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what am I to tell them?"

Elohim said to Moses, "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh [I am what I am]," and added, "Here is what to say to the people of Israel: 'Ehyeh has sent me to you.' Elohim said further to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: '[yud-hey-vuv-hey], (Yahweh) the Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac and the Elohim of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered generation after generation.

IS THAT STATEMTENT BY YAHWEH HIMSELF IMPORTANT?

Exodus 20 verse seven (The "Third Commandment") says: "You are not to "lash·shawv" (use lightly, destroy, or bring to nought) the name of YHVH your Elohim." By hiding, refusing to use, and purposely misspelling His name, we have done just that.

The vowels we find in surviving uses of the sacred name in chumashim or siddurim were placed there by the Masorites in the 8th century, when they created vowel points to help people pronounce the words of the Torah. However, the Masorites were afraid to put the correct vowels with the Divine Name, due to the superstition of "ineffability" brought back from Babylon. This superstition said that the name of a deity should not be spoken so as to not bring attention to one's self and receive the wrath of the "god." So instead of placing the vowels necessary to correctly pronounce the Divine Name, they placed the vowels of the word "Adonawy" (meaning "my lord") with the tetragramaton, and later the vowel sounds for the Hebrew word "Eloah" (singular form of Elohim) This was done to make it impossible for anyone reading the Masoretic text to pronounce the Divine Name -- purposely or otherwise.

This substitution lead to incorrect pronunciations such as "Yehoveh" or "Yehoweh" or "Jehovah."

The Masorites changed Hebrew names which begin with a short form of the Divine Name due to the superstition of ineffability. They again substituted the vowels for the word Eloah. This substitution is confirmed by the earlier (3rd century) Aramaic addition of vowels which preserve (in the Peshita) the original pronunciation of the Divine Name used in the beginning of common names. Examples are Yahu-shaw-fawt ("Jehosaphat" in English due to Masoretic substitution resulting in Yeho-shaw-fawt) which means "Yah judged, " and Yahu-shu'a ("Jehoshua, Joshua, Yehoshua" in English due to Masoretic substitution resulting in "Yeho'shu'a" or "Yeshua" or "Yeshua") which means "Yah saved" or "Yah's salvation," which is the name of the Messiah.
